Prime Minister Andrew Holness and Abdullah Shahid, president of the United Nations General Assembly, met this morning (September 5) for discussions on, among other matters, the threats posed climate change, particularly on small island developing states (SIDS).

Shahid was visiting Holness at the Office of the Prime Minister on the final day of his three-day working visit to the island.

Climate change poses an existential threat to SIDS like Jamaica,” Holness said in a Twitter post after the meeting, at which discussions were also held on education, youth and debt financing.

“As we work toward sustainable prosperity, we will ensure that these issues receive attention at the 2022 United Nations General Assembly.”

In his own comments after the meeting, Abdullah congratulated Holness on what he said were the many achievements made by Jamaica as the country celebrates its 60th anniversary of independence, and United Nations membership.

He noted that, during the meeting, views were also exchanged on tourism .

Among those who were also in attendance at the meeting was Senator Kamina Johnson Smith, minister of foreign affairs and foreign trade.
