Deputy Prime Minister Dr Horace Chang has announced that the eagerly awaited general election will be held no later than September, while encouraging Jamaica Labour Party workers to be proactive in their approach to mobilising voters.
“We are operating within the law. So start looking out. We can’t go beyond September. So make sure between now and mid-August, find your neighbour, find your friend… and line them up now,” he said.
Speaking at an appreciation function for party workers in St James Southern on Sunday, Chang encouraged party workers to make their preparations and complete what needs to be done.
“You must make sure you line up all the voters you need for election day now. You have good supervisors. When I come here, I see bright people out there. You understand what’s to be done; do it now. Write them down in your little book.”
Chang’s announcement has further bolstered the election campaign of both political parties as they gear up to battle at the polls.
The veteran politician also urged party workers to engage young people in politics so they understand the operation of the government in providing opportunities for young people. “…So call them; get them to come and work with you.
“You must know that on election day, you have your team of voters that you want to get out. And you know where they are. You know how they’re coming out,” Chang added, charging the workers that they have a responsibility to work well and generously to win the election.
Sunday’s appreciation event was hosted by Homer Davis, the sitting Member of Parliament for St James Southern. He is expected to contest the seat again and will be challenged by Nekeisha Burchell of the People’s National Party.
