Legendary dancehall artiste Beenie Man is in the United States for his ‘King of the Dancehall’ tour. While promoting the series of performances, the veteran artiste stopped by The Breakfast Club on Power 105.1 FM where he spoke about his career, the importance of his music, and the fiery debate surrounding his claim to the title of King of Dancehall.
The conversation also turned to his long-standing, yet one-sided, rivalry with Vybz Kartel, who in recent months has reignited debate over the coveted designation.
During the interview, co-host Loren LaRosa referenced the title of the tour and the discourse surrounding it, quipping, “This is the dethroning tour right here!”
Beenie Man, however, dismissed the notion. “I’m not dethroning anyone,” he responded. “I don’t come to talk about people. I’m a king because of my music and my longevity in the business, and I’m still here. I’ve been here since the ’80s, through the ’90s, and I’m still here, doing the same thing.”

When asked whether his claim to the title had invited hate from other artistes, Beenie Man clarified, “I did not call myself the king. I was crowned King,” fortifying that his crown was not self-appointed but conferred through recognition of his contributions. He acknowledged that comparisons between him and newer artistes are inevitable, stating, “Every artiste that has come into this music business since me, they’ve compared me to them. So it’s a great thing.”
The discussion also addressed the ongoing tension with Vybz Kartel, whose recent assertions regarding the King of Dancehall title have drawn attention. Kartel’s decision not to engage in a lyrical clash with Beenie Man, as suggested in an Instagram post, has added to the rivalry. Beenie Man, however, appeared unfazed. “I’m not fighting it, not disputing it,” he said, maintaining that his focus remains on his music rather than the debate.
