Immortals J’ouvert continues to define its place within Jamaica’s Carnival calendar, not simply as the opening event, but as a major experience in its own right.

With over 3,200 participants on the road this year, the event has grown steadily, reflecting increasing demand and a shift in how J’ouvert is positioned within the wider Carnival offering.

For many, the concept still needs context. J’ouvert, which comes from the French jour ouvert, meaning “daybreak” or “opening of the day,” is a pre-dawn street party that marks the official start of Carnival. It is rooted in Caribbean tradition and has evolved into one of the most energetic and expressive parts of the season.

In Jamaica, that expression is taking on new dimensions. Demand for Immortals J’ouvert was evident in the lead-up to the event, with strong online activity and limited availability driving resale interest across social platforms.

This year’s staging also reflected a deliberate shift in programming. GenXS moved beyond its traditional reliance on Trinidad-based headliners and looked to Grenada, one of the most talked-about territories in the 2025 Carnival season. The inclusion of Lil Kerry and Muddy, both emerging artists with strong regional traction, introduced a different sound and energy to the experience.

Tagyei Belinfante, who leads marketing and artist booking for GenXS, said the decision was informed by ongoing engagement with regional trends. “We stay close to what’s happening across the Caribbean. Grenada had a strong year, and Lil Kerry and Muddy were part of that movement. They’re young, they’re current, and they’re connecting with audiences. Bringing them into J’Ouvert felt like the right decision at the right time.”

The build-up to the event began before Carnival weekend, with Muddy appearing at the GenXS season launch, helping to generate early momentum and anticipation for J’ouvert.

Mellow in Yellow: Architect and GenXS Director Mala Morrison brightened the scene with a sunny sophistication in a draped butter yellow dress.

From a production standpoint, the experience combined music, movement, and large-scale activations across the route. The event featured seven trucks moving through the streets of New Kingston, forming part of a premium J’ouvert experience delivered by Smirnoff, the title sponsor. Mala Morrison, who oversees the masquerader experience, said the approach focused on both energy and responsibility.

“J’ouvert is high energy, but it also has to be managed properly at this scale. We wanted to make sure people could enjoy the experience while still moving comfortably through the city and respecting the environment we’re operating in.

”This included the introduction of the Pepsi “Rinse and Recharge Zone,” which incorporated water and foam elements along the route, allowing participants to wash off and reset before continuing through the streets of New Kingston.

At the starting grounds, KFC “Saucy Paint Cannons” were introduced, adding a new layer to the visual and interactive experience and contributing to the overall atmosphere at the beginning of the event.

Together, these elements reflect how Immortals J’ouvert is evolving, both in scale and in execution.

As Carnival in Jamaica continues to grow, J’ouvert is increasingly being recognised not just as the start of the season, but as a defining part of the overall experience.
