Jamaica recorded 176 coronavirus (COVID-19) cases in July—a 16 per cent increase from the 152 recorded in June, according to data from the Ministry of Health and Wellness.
With the severity of the pandemic presumably behind us four years after its initial explosion in March 2020, many Jamaicans may have forgotten just how dangerous this virus is to the entire immune system.
And, with 13 COVID-related deaths recorded since the start of 2024, vaccination is said to be the best course of action, especially for the immunocompromised.
While most people are familiar with conventional preventative measures like social distancing and wearing a mask, here are some essential ways you can enhance your immune system during the reported surge of the virus.
Boost your immune system
A strong immune system is crucial when protecting yourself from diseases. One way to achieve this is by taking vitamins complimentary to a balanced diet. Vitamin C is renowned for encouraging white blood cell production and fighting infections and bacterial attacks.
Consume foods rich in vitamin C. These include red bell peppers, green bell peppers, oranges, and kiwis. A whole grapefruit gives you more than 100 per cent of the recommended daily dose of Vitamin C for a 2,000-calorie diet.
One grapefruit includes 88mg of Vitamin C and you only need 66mg.
Strengthen your respiratory system
In conjunction with taking Immune-boosting vitamins, it’s important to strengthen your respiratory system. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs), found in most cleaning products like air fresheners can irritate the nose, throat, and lungs and can weaken the respiratory defences, making individuals more susceptible to respiratory infections, including COVID-19.
Luckily there are low-VOC and VOC-free products that are designed to reduce the amount of harmful chemicals released into the air. Using natural cleaning ingredients like vinegar, baking soda, or lemon juice, is less likely to cause respiratory irritation.
When using cleaning products, make sure to keep the area ventilated, open windows — and use fans to help disperse any fumes.
Keep your surroundings sanitised
Cleanliness is always a crucial aspect of disease prevention.
Bleach and alcohol are the most effective cleaners but can leave your home smelling like a hospital. Luckily, essential oils are both antiseptic and have a delightful aroma.
With a myriad of options to choose from, adding small drops of the potent tea-tree oil to white vinegar and water in a spray bottle can make a basic disinfectant spray offering a natural, effective way to disinfect your home while avoiding harsh chemical smells.
