
India celebrated their freedom from the British Empire with the theme ‘Viksit Bharat’ on Thursday (August 15).
Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi hoisted the national flag and addressed the nation, just as the first Prime Minister of Independent India, Jawaharlal Nehru, did above the Lahori Gate of the Red Fort in Delhi.
This tradition is usually followed by an address to citizens of India.
The theme of this year’s Independence ‘Viksit Bharat’ means developed India and is the government’s plan to steer the country towards more development by 2047. Thousands of Indians attended the Prime Minister’s address.

The Prime Minister’s address is considered a joyous occasion, drawing an audience of citizens nationwide. His address not only celebrated India’s achievements but also the future and goals of its continued journey towards progress.
Independence marks a historic milestone for the nation as they honour the sacrifices of freedom fighters and those whose names were forgotten in the country’s fight for freedom before 1947. Names like Mahatma Gandhi, Bhagat Singh and Vijayalakshmi Pandit are especially revered on August 15.
Indians across the diaspora celebrate the occasion with enthusiasm and of course, a deep sense of patriotism.

Citizens also celebrate Independence Day with fun parades, cultural events, and singing traditional, patriotic songs.
Schools tend to host cultural programmes and children are encouraged to enact poems and speeches as well as perform cultural dances from all over the country.
Interestingly, the day is also acknowledged as the anniversary of the separation of India and Pakistan.
