Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Senator Kamina Johnson Smith, highlighted significant progress in enhancing Jamaica’s security framework .

Johnson Smith while speaking at a recent Senate session reported a notable reduction in major crimes for 2023, with murders down by 7.8 per cent and a decrease in shootings, rapes, robberies, and break-ins.

As of October 5, murders were down 18 per cent compared to the previous year, alongside further declines in other crime categories.

Senator Johnson Smith emphasized that these reductions represent the lowest levels of major crime in over 22 years, reflecting the government’s strategic investments in security.

She acknowledged ongoing challenges, particularly with organized crime, and underscored the need for continued efforts to ensure safety and stability for all Jamaicans.
