Is it too late to say sorry? Kanye West apologises for his antisemitism

Kanye West

Hatred and antisemitism are abominable and odious. It should be checked at every opportunity.

The notion of the “Wandering Jew” is hateful, callous and cruel, yet has persisted throughout human history. People should know better.

They say Kanye West is a talented rapper and a major entertainment figure. All the more reason why he shouldn’t be spewing vile antisemitism. It is most unbecoming.

For too long, he got away with horrible statements against Jewish people. He is not a callow boy but a grown man approaching 50. Is this what he wants his children to remember him for, a hater of Jewish people who admired Hitler?

West took out a full-page ad in the Wall Street Journal and apologised for his antisemitism. Entitled, ‘To Those I’ve Hurt,’ it read in part: “Twenty-five years ago, I was in a car accident that broke my jaw and caused injury to the right frontal lobe of my brain. At the time, the focus was on the visible damage-the fracture, the swelling and the immediate physical trauma. The deeper injury, the one inside my skull, went unnoticed.

“Bipolar disorder comes with its own defence system. Denial. When you’re manic, you don’t think you’re sick. You think everyone else is overreacting. You feel like you’re seeing the world more clearly than ever, when in reality you’re losing your grip entirely.

“In that fractured state, I gravitated toward the most destructive symbol I could find, the swastika and even sold T-shirts bearing it. One of the difficult aspects of having bipolar type-1 is the disconnected moments—many of which I still cannot recall that lead to poor judgment and reckless behaviour that oftentimes feels like an out-of-body experience. I regret and am deeply mortified by my actions in that state and am committed to accountability, treatment and meaningful change. It does not excuse what I did, though. I am not a Nazi or an antisemite. I love Jewish people.”

I guess we must all accept his apology and take him at his word. He says it was his bipolar condition that made him insane in the membrane.

Kanye and Bianca-Censori

Personally, there is nothing in this world that could make me say such vile and hateful things about an ethnic or religious group. Kanye West credits his wife Bianca Censori for making him see the error of his ways and has helped to stabilise his behaviour. There’s nothing quite like the love of a good woman!

Still, his antisemitism and disrespect for Jewish people were out of order. Let’s see what he has to say in the future, and let’s hope he doesn’t blame it on a relapse!

The more cynical among us may see this as a publicity move, a capricious device as corporate giants continue to shun him and his record sales fall. He’s not the force he once was.

Kayne West ought to know by now, you don’t go around hurting people with terrible words, spreading hate and being obnoxious.

Antisemitism is spreading in the world, and he is helping that because he is a notable personage with influence over the young.

His parents have passed, but someone needs to talk good sense into him—counsel him as to how to treat and respect people. Don’t be mean.

Karma is a bitch, Kanye.
