Today, May 3, we celebrate World Press Freedom Day; a day dedicated to honouring the invaluable role of journalism.
Journalists stand as reporters of the truth in today’s world where false or misinformation is prevalent in media.
Originating from the 1991 Windhoek Declaration, World Press Freedom Day was a global call for press freedom, officially recognised by the UN General Assembly in 1993.
Whether reporting from war zones, or crime scenes, exposing corruption, or amplifying the voices of the marginalised, the press serves as a foundation of freedom and democracy.
But why celebrate press freedom?
Imagine a world devoid of press freedom. There would be no investigative reports unveiling corruption, no stories amplifying unheard voices, and no truth-seekers holding governments and organisations accountable.
This absence could leave civilians vulnerable to manipulation, as critical information remains hidden or unchallenged.
The role of journalism is not merely to inform but to empower and protect the integrity of society by ensuring transparency and accountability.

So, why should you care?
Press freedom symbolises the media’s right to reflect societal truths. It encompasses the freedom to question, challenge, and learn, and it can even shift the way the media is understood—the manner in which news is delivered can change how people operate, how they think, and may even provide a perspective that was not apparent before. It is about the right to know, to understand, and to empathise.
So, members of the press, as we raise our pens, cameras, and keyboards in celebration, let us remember the brave journalists who risk their lives every day to bring us the truth.
Let us honour the diversity of voices that enhances our understanding of the world. And let’s reaffirm our commitment to defending press freedom wherever it is threatened.
In a world rife with fake news and misinformation, let us cherish the power of the press to inform, and inspire.
Happy World Press Freedom Day!
