Reading Time: 2 minutes

Celebrated annually on May 16, Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD) aims to ensure everyone has easy access to the digital universe regardless of ability.

This day serves as a reminder to take action, making the digital space a place of inclusivity.

Why do we celebrate this day with such excitement? Imagine navigating the internet with your eyes closed or unable to hear a video.

For 1.3 billion people (16 per cent) across the globe with disabilities, facing challenges is part of daily life, and GAAD aims to change how web developers approach accessibility and functionality of their interfaces— creating websites, apps, and tech tools that everyone can use is doable in today’s tech advanced society, so why not?

By focusing on making digital spaces welcoming for all, Global Accessibility Awareness Day is a celebration and a reminder of the profound importance of diversity and inclusion.

From small website tweaks to major design revisions, every effort counts.

How Can You Make a Difference?

Assistive Tech

Discover how screen readers, Braille displays, and other tools make digital worlds accessible to everybody.

Host a Digital Inclusion Talk

Share tips, tricks, and why it matters. Think of it as a party where everyone learns something new.

Colour Contrast on Websites

How’s your website’s colour contrast? Check if your pages have enough colour contrast for those who have sight issues.

Write Descriptions

Be mindful of those who are hard of hearing or deaf. They want to know what is happening in the videos, too!

Capitalize Your Hashtags

It’s basic yet effective. Capitalising each word in your hashtags improves readability for those with visual impairments and ensures that screen readers pronounce them correctly.

These are just a few ways, we can improve accessibility on the Internet.

GAAD calls for technology experts, educators, and average internet users to reconsider how we create and consume digital information. This day promotes empathy and compassion, allowing us to build a more equitable world.
