Today, October 10, health officials and mental health advocates around the world are observing World Mental Health Day, a public education campaign geared towards promoting the mental health of individuals while breaking the stigma and discrimination against those who suffer mental health conditions.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), one in eight people globally are living with mental health conditions, which can impact their physical health, their well-being, how they connect with others, and their livelihoods.

Issues such as stress, trauma, and social isolation are known risk factors for persons developing mental conditions.

This year, World Mental Health Day is being championed under the theme ‘Mental health is a universal human right’, which seeks to foster greater access to mental health services for individuals living with mental health challenges, inclusion, protection from health risks, and among other things.

As the world observes World Mental Health Day, Our Today has researched what are some of the early signs of mental health challenges and ways in which you can assist someone who may be displaying these symptoms.

Warning signs

  • Withdrawal from friends and activities
  • Excessive fear or worry
  • Extreme mood changes
  • Low energy
  • Sleeping disorder
  • Changes in eating habits
  • Suicidal problems

The first step in assisting a family member or a friend to overcome their mental health condition is to communicate with them about the symptoms or emotions they may be experiencing. A major part of the communication process is to uncover what is the best way to get them the professional support that they may need.

Persons experiencing any of the above-mentioned symptoms, or who may know someone experiencing these symptoms and require mental health support can contact the Ministry of Health and Wellness, Mental Health Suicide Prevention Helpline at 888-NEW-LIFE or (639-5433).

Persons can also go to the Ministry of Health and Wellness webpage to schedule a free counselling session.
