Some 700 residents living along the corridor between Maroon Town Square and Shaw Castle Square are set to benefit from a major infrastructure upgrade, as the Government commenced road improvement works valued at approximately J$50 million.
The project, which is being funded through a regular government allocation, will see significant improvements to the critical roadway linking the two communities. The scope of the works includes the construction and rehabilitation of culverts, retaining walls, and general road surface enhancements to improve resilience and safety.
Member of Parliament for St. James Southern Homer Davis confirmed on April 30 that preparatory work was completed, with full-scale operations commencing on May 2.
The improvements are expected to ease travel for residents, farmers, schoolchildren, and other commuters who rely on the route for daily activities.
MP Davis explained that residents have long called for intervention, citing worsening road conditions and safety concerns.
“Citizens really needed this road to be done because… when taxis come up here [Maroon Town], sometimes they don’t want to go into Shaw Castle.”

Furthermore, he noted that this latest investment is part of a broader push by the Government to modernise rural infrastructure and ensure safer, more reliable access to essential services.
“It should have started last year, but due to some technical challenges that they [the contractors] were having with the whole procurement system, we’ve just reached the point where… equipment will be on the road starting the rehabilitation of this road.
Davis also thanked the Andrew Holness administration for making the project possible by providing
allocation for the much-needed work to begin that will benefit those who traverse the area.
He is urging the public to exercise patience and cooperate with the work crews throughout the project timeline.
