Britain’s Jack Draper pulled off a stunning comeback to defeat Novak Djokovic and secure a spot in the Indian Wells quarter finals, calling it a potential big moment in his season.
Draper, the defending champion, fought through a grueling two hour and 35 minute battle to edge the 24-time Grand Slam winner 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5).
Djokovic, a five time Indian Wells champion, had beaten Draper in their only previous meeting at Wimbledon 2021, but the Briton turned the tables in a match that tested both players’ endurance. After dropping the first set, Draper raised his level to force a decider, including a tense 26 shot rally on Djokovic’s serve.
Serving for the match at 5-4, Draper was briefly broken, sending the contest into a tie break, where he regrouped to seal the victory. The win is a major boost for Draper, who has battled back from an eight month arm injury, and sets up a quarter final clash with former world number one Daniil Medvedev.
