The Jamaica Agricultural Commodities Regulatory Authority (JACRA) is urging persons to take advantage of the instructions offered through its Coffee Training Institute to become certified coffee testers.

Peter Thompson, director general at JACRA, noted that three members of staff have been trained at the Coffee Training Institute and are now Q Grade trainers, which is the highest level one can attain in coffee testing.

“We hope that, within the next year or two, we will have some more persons becoming trained, so that they can train others in the industry to ensure that the quality of the Jamaican coffee brands is maintained,” he further stated.

Thompson outlined that the Jamaican coffee has to go through a rigorous process of examination and testing before it leaves the island’s shores.

Part of this process includes the JACRA conducting a cup tasting of all the coffee it has received before it can be exported.

He noted that since the establishment of the institute, there has been significant improvement in the quality of Jamaican coffee.

“Quality begins at the farm level, so from land preparation all the way up to consumption, you have quality control along the value chain. We do capacity-building with our farmers to ensure that they comply with the standards that would have been established and we have seen improvements,” he stated.

Jamaica is known for its signature coffee brand, Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee, which is owned by JACRA.
