Two months after the world witnessed the now-infamous Chris Rock slap at the 2022 Oscars, Jada Pinkett-Smith – the wife of the aggressor, actor Will Smith – has broken her silence on the matter.

Addressing the moment her husband of over 25 years, slapped the comedian, on her Red Table Talk Show, Pinkett-Smith said she hopes both men have the chance to “heal, talk this out and reconcile”.

Opening the episode of the Red Table Talk special on alopecia, the mother of two began, saying: “This is a really important Red Table Talk on alopecia. Considering what I’ve been through with my own health and at the Oscars, thousands have reached out to me with their stories.”

The actress, whose voice was then played over clips of those suffering from the disorder, expressed that she would be using the moment to give those suffering the same fate, to talk about what it is like to live with the condition and to inform others what the disorder actually is.

Seguing to the infamous night, she continued: “Now, about the Oscars, my deepest hope is that these two intelligent capable men have an opportunity to heal, talk this out and reconcile. The state of the world today… we need ’em both and we all actually need one another more than ever.

“Until then, Will and I are continuing to do what we have done for the last 28 years, and that’s keep figuring out this thing called life together. Thank you for listening,” she added.

Rock, who hosted the 94th Academy Awards, in his usual fashion, made jabs at members of the audience, including Pinkett-Smith. After Rock joked about her bald head, Smith made his way to the stage and slapped the comedian across his face, later instructing him to, “Keep my wife’s name out your f$%king mouth”.

Smith who shortly after won a Best Actor Oscar for his performance in King Richard, would the next day, in an official statement, issue an apology via Instagram.

Violence in all of its forms is poisonous and destructive. My behavior at last night’s Academy Awards was unacceptable and inexcusable. Jokes at my expense are a part of the job, but a joke about Jada’s medical condition was too much for me to bear and I reacted emotionally.

I would like to publicly apologize to you, Chris. I was out of line and I was wrong. I am embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be. There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness.

Smith, who has been banned from the Oscars for the next 10 years, also resigned from The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

While this is the first time Pinkett-Smith has directly addressed the issue, in the opening of this season’s Red Table Talk earlier this year, a statement was shown addressing the matter.

The statement read that, with all that happened in the last few weeks, Pinkett-Smith’s family would be focusing on deep healing and would address the issues at the right time.

Rock, who has referenced the slap several times in his stand up performances, has yet to publicly respond to Smith’s apology.
