Jamaica and several other Caribbean countries are expected to see a partial solar eclipse today, April 8.

The first total solar eclipse for the year is expected to cross North America passing Mexico and Canada later this afternoon.

According to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), a total solar eclipse occurs when the sun, moon and the earth are in a direct line. Countries that see the total eclipse are in the centre of
the moon’s shadow when it hits Earth.

A partial eclipse will be visible in Caribbean countries such as Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Jamaica, The Bahamas, St Kitts-Nevis and others.

A partial solar eclipse happens when the Sun, Moon, and Earth are not exactly lined up. Only a part of the Sun will appear to be covered, according to NASA.

According to weather calendar timeanddate.com, Jamaica will be able to view the partial solar eclipse today from 12:55 p.m. until 2:54 p.m.

Persons are being cautioned against looking at a partial or uneclipsed sun without proper eye-gear.

Sunglasses are not recommended as a protective gear to view an eclipse.
