Jamaica’s women won gold in the final track event of the 2022 World Indoor Athletics Championships that concluded in Belgrade, Serbia on Sunday (March 20).

The island’s mile-relay quartet of Junelle Bromfield, Janieve Russell, Roneisha McGregor and Stephenie-Ann McPherson clocked a season-best 3:28.40 to win in convincing fashion over The Netherlands team that ran 3:28.57 for second place.

The Dutch side just edged out the Polish team that ran 3:28.59.

The victory means Jamaica came away from the championships with three medals – one gold and two bronze medals. McPherson returns home with two medals, having already won a bronze medal in a national indoor record of 50.79 in the 400m.

Kimberly Williams won a bronze in the Women’s Triple Jump on Sunday morning.

Belgium won a thrilling men’s 4x400m relay in 3:06.52 over Spain (3:06.82) and The Netherlands (3:06.90).

Meanwhile, Natoya Goule finished a disappointing fourth in the 800m final that was won by American Ajee Wilson in 1:59.09. The silver medal went to Ethiopia’s Freweyni Hailu (2:00.54) and Uganda’s Halymah Nakaayi (2:00.66).

Goule went into the race as the second fastest woman in the world this year and world leader Keely Hodgkinson did not participate.

There were no surprises in the 60m hurdles final where Grant Holloway stormed to victory in 7.39 over Frenchman Pascal Martinot-Lagarde (7.50) and the USA’s Jarret Eaton (7.53).

The final day, that began with an astonishing world record in the women’s triple jump by Venezuela’s Yulimar Rojas (15.74m), ended with another in the men’s pole vault as Mondo Duplantis cleared 6.20m to break his own record set just two weeks ago.
