As the nation braces for the approaching hurricane, the Jamaica Emergency Medicine Association (JEMA) is calling on all citizens to prioritise not only safety, but also health protection and emotional well-being during this critical period.

JEMA reminds the public to have a basic home health kit ready with essential items such as:

1.    Prescribed medications for chronic conditions like asthma, diabetes, and hypertension.

2.    First aid supplies and antiseptic.

3.    Clean water and purification tools.

4.    A thermometer and pain relief medication.

5.    Emergency contact numbers.

JEMA also cautioned the public to avoid wading in floodwaters to prevent infections, to store and purify water safely to reduce waterborne diseases, and to keep food properly sealed. Families are also urged to ensure that medical devices such as inhalers, insulin delivery devices, and blood pressure monitors are charged, functional, and within reach.

The association emphasised the importance of emotional health during emergencies since moments like these can bring anxiety and fear.

“Stay connected, check in on loved ones, and focus on calm and positive coping skills. Emergency medicine physicians and health professionals across Jamaica remain on alert and ready to serve,” said the JEMA.

“JEMA encourages all citizens to follow official advisories, seek shelter early if necessary, and extend care, patience, and kindness to one another as the nation prepares for impact. Let us remain calm, vigilant, and united. Through preparedness and prevention, we will overcome. Stay safe. Stay strong. Stay healthy,” it added.
