The National Compliance and Regulatory Authority (NCRA) and the Consumer Affairs Commission (CAC) are jointly advising that an islandwide product recall has been issued for the Jif peanut butter brand, due to potential salmonella contamination.
Product manufacturer, the J.M. Smucker Company, announced a voluntary recall of Jif products sold in the US and Canada last month. Other countries have since issued similar recalls for the product as well.
Our Today had previously reported recalls of Jif products by authorities in Belize and the British Virgin Islands.
In a statement last week, the CAC indicated that the peanut butter recall in Jamaica would affect products bearing the codes 1274425 – 2140425.
For Jamaica, however, the recall applies to the imported Jif Creamy 340 gram (which bears the code 2032425) and Jif Reduced Fat 454 gram (2029425).
Citizens are being urged to check the labelling of Jif peanut butter for the listed codes which would determine if the product is among batches suspected to have been contaminated. A recommendation to either dispose of the product or return it to the consumers’ point of purchase for a refund was offered.
“The regulatory authorities are encouraging consumers to check the labels of such packages prior to purchase/consumption as informal importers or persons who purchase such items otherwise may have inadvertently bought this product,” said the CAC.
“If consumers have products matching the above description in their possession, they should dispose of it immediately or return to the point of purchase for a refund,” the authority noted further.
What’s more, the CAC disclosed that the local distributor has agreed to voluntarily recall these items from the shelves and return them to distribution centres for destruction.
When contacted by Our Today this morning (June 8), a representative of Chas E Ramson Limited’s marketing department confirmed that recall efforts remained ongoing.
The representative indicated, however, that she was not in a position to verify a destruction date and requested that our newsroom follow up next week for further information.
