Jamaica hit a landmark 100,000 confirmed COVID-19 infections on Friday as it registered a third consecutive day of record new cases.
In its latest COVID-19 clinical management summary, the Ministry of Health indicated there were 1,593 infections recorded on Friday, taking the country to 101,056 cases overall since the first case was discovered in March 2020.
The positivity rate was 49.9 per cent at public testing facilities and 13.1 per cent at private facilities.
There were six deaths, taking overal fatalities to 2,495.
CROSSED 1,000 DAILY MARK ON WEDNESDAY
With concerns that the fourth wave and the current spike in infections could potentially overwhelm local health facilities in coming weeks, there were 265 persons hospitalised, 68 of whom were moderately ill, 25 severely ill and eight critically ill.
On Wednesday (January 5), Jamaica for the first time crossed the 1,000 mark for COVID-19 cases confirmed in a single day, with 1,128 new infections recorded by the health ministry. There were 1,269 cases a day later.
The previous peak was 929 cases in a single day, which Jamaica confirmed on August 28 last year, during the onslaught of the Delta variant.
It is believed the island is currently feeling the impact of the highly transmissible Omicron variant, which has been wreaking havoc throughout the Caribbean and the rest of the world.
As the country comes to terms with its new landmark for infections, the health ministry has encouraged individuals to take part in the two-day vaccination blitz for persons requiring first or second doses of a COVID-19 vaccine, which got under way this morning.
