
For the fourth time in two weeks, Jamaica has hit a new record in daily novel coronavirus (COVID-19) cases, with 468 new infections confirmed in the past 24 hours.
According to statistics provided by the Ministry of Health and Wellness, the island now has a cumulative caseload of 19,773, of which 6,513 are designated as active cases.
Jamaica’s death toll remains unchanged at 378, while 12,684 patients have made a full recovery from the infectious disease.
The country’s positivity rate now stands at a staggering 31.1 per cent as the confirmed cases came from a testing batch size of 1,503 samples.
The Ministry of Health and Wellness indicated that while all parishes confirmed new infections, Kingston and St Andrew recorded the highest incident rate, with 172 new cases. St Catherine and its 75 new cases are followed by Manchester (59), St James (29) and Trelawny (25) to round out the parishes with the most cases.
Hospitalisations have nearly tripled in the last two weeks, up from 89 at the end of January to 251 currently.
Of the 251 patients being treated, 49 have been categorised as ‘moderately ill’, while another 19 are classified as ‘critically ill’.
