Jamaica joins India in celebrating 77 years as a republic

The Government of Jamaica, on Monday, joined in commemorating the 77th Republic Day of India during celebrations held at India House in Kingston.

Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Kamina Johnson Smith, attended the event alongside Permanent Secretary and Head of the Jamaican Foreign Service, Ambassador Sheila Sealy Monteith, and representatives of the government.

In her remarks, Minister Johnson Smith reiterated Jamaica’s appreciation for India’s timely humanitarian assistance following Hurricane Melissa late last year.

She highlighted the provision of over 20 tonnes of disaster relief and humanitarian items, including food supplies, generators, solar lanterns, hygiene kits, as well as support from the Indian diaspora, which continues to bolster Jamaica’s recovery efforts.

Permanent Secretary and Head of the Jamaican Foreign Service, Ambassador Sheila Sealy Monteith, engaging with other attendees at the 77th Republic Day of India celebrations held at India House in Kingston.

The minister also acknowledged the long-standing and fruitful partnership between Jamaica and India, marked by active cooperation across several sectors, including capacity building and education.

She noted India’s continued support through the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation Programme, which has contributed to the development of skills and knowledge across diverse fields, while reaffirming Jamaica’s commitment to exploring further cooperation where mutual interests align.
