Jamaica won two medals at the World Athletics Relays as the mixed 4x100m mined silver and the women’s 4x100m got bronze at Guangzhou, China on Sunday (May 11).

The mixed relay 4×100 team of Serena Cole, Krytal Sloley, Javari Thomas and Bryan Levell was second in 40.44 seconds behind gold medal winners Canada in 40.30s. Great Britain was third in 40.88s.

Jamaica made two changes to the team that ran 41.04s in the heat, bringing Cole for Natasha Morrison on the opening leg and Levell for Rasheed Foster on anchor, and it paid dividends. The Jamaicans collected J$3.18m (US$20,000) for the second spot.

Morrison, who was replaced in the mixed relay, then opened for the women’s 4x100m and won bronze along with Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, Tina Clayton and Shericka Jackson in 42.33s.

Great Britain, with a powerful anchor leg by Nia Wedderburn-Goodison, sped past Jackson while coming from third to first in 42.21s. Spain was second in 42.28s.

Team Jamaica walked away with J$1.59m (US$10,000) for third place, and Morrison, who competed for both medal-winning teams, should be smiling.

Meanwhile, the Jamaican teams that failed to make the finals got a chance to qualify for the World Championship for the second time by finishing in the top three teams.

The men’s 4x400m team grabbed the opportunity, finishing third in 3:02.00 and booked their tickets to the Tokyo World Championships in September courtesy of an improved run by Rusheen McDonald (46.09), Demar Francis (45.61), Zandrian Barnes (44.78) and Tarees Rhoden (45.52) on Saturday, the team ran 3:03.54.

The men’s 4×100 team of Rohan Watson, Julian Forte, Yohan Blake and Kishane Thompson once again failed to finish the race. On Saturday, the baton was dropped between Forte and Blake; this time, Forte got injured, and the exchange never happened.

Olympic 100m silver medallist Thompson on anchor, didn’t even get to touch the baton in two races.

The mixed 4x400m quartet of Javier Brown, Kelly-Ann Beckford, Delano Kennedy and Roniesha McGregor ran 3:14.42 minutes and was fourth and just missed qualification to the World Championship.

The women’s 4x400m team failed to show for their race and will have to find other opportunities to get qualified for the Tokyo World Championships.
