In its weekly monkeypox update, the Ministry of Health and Wellness has confirmed five new monkeypox cases, two of which Health Minister Dr Christopher Tufton had announced last Tuesday (September 6).
The total number of recorded cases on the island is now 12, with eight of those cases being active as of today (September 12).
The breakdown of the 12 cases is as follow:
Of the 12 recorded cases, 10 were locally transmitted with two cases contracted through travel overseas.
This means that monkeypox is being spread by locals on the island who have contracted the virus.
The majority of cases can be found in Kingston and St Andrew, which has recorded five cases overall. Two cases have been reported in Clarendon, one case in Manchester, two in St Elizabeth and two in St James.
MOSTLY MALES CONTRACTING VIRUS
Patients who tested positive for the virus also fall within the age range of 25 to 52 years old.
Males also form the majority of those who have contracted the virus with 11 testing positive, accompanied by one female.
The number of persons in quarantine after coming into close contact with monkeypox patients remains at 23 from the previous week.
The ministry is also investigating the death of a patient who tested positive for monkeypox. It has not yet been confirmed if the patient’s death was as a result of contracting the virus.
A total of 25 tests for monkeypox have been done so far.
