Jamaica and the Dominican Republic have officially signed a Parliamentary Friendship Agreement, marking a milestone in bilateral relations after years of diplomatic and legislative collaboration.

The historic agreement was signed during a formal ceremony in Santo Domingo on May 28 by Senate President Tom Tavares-Finson and his Dominican counterpart, Senator Ricardo de los Santos

The agreement commits both countries to strengthening inter-parliamentary dialogue, legislative cooperation, and shared democratic and development goals.

Commenting on the bilateral pact, Tavares-Finson remarked: “This agreement strengthens the bonds between our nations and highlights the vital role of parliamentary diplomacy. It offers a platform for legislative collaboration and mutual learning to better serve the people of Jamaica and the Dominican Republic.”

During the visit, Senator Tavares-Finson also met with Alfredo Pacheco, President of the Chamber of Deputies, and other senior officials. Discussions included regional integration, climate change, migration, and the promotion of democratic values.

The agreement provides a framework for direct communication between both legislatures and encourages the exchange of ideas and best practices.

Both countries have expressed optimism about the positive outcomes this agreement will yield in the years ahead and have framed it as a timely step toward building stronger, more resilient democracies through partnership and mutual support.
