The Jamaican government on Tuesday, November 21, signed an agreement with South Africa to strengthen collaboration in sports.
Sports Minister Olivia Grange, who signed the agreement on Tuesday with South Africa’s deputy minister of sports, arts and culture, Nocawe Noncedo Mafu, during a ceremony held at the ROK Hotel in downtown Kingston, said the pact will provide opportunities for the development of frameworks to explore data collection and mapping.
“This is one programme of cooperation that we have been waiting for because we know that by working together with the Government of Jamaica, there is a lot that South Africa can learn, particularly around the issue of school sports and university sports and grassroots sports,” Mafu said.
The South African sports minister during the signing ceremony, also expressed appreciation for the partnership.

The agreement will also facilitate collaboration in tertiary research, joint conferences and postgraduate students.
There will also be collaboration among the respective federations, including the use of sports and sports signs facilities in both countries.
Grange announced earlier this week that a delegation from the Government of South Africa this week will conduct a study tour of the island’s sports programme, as part of a bilateral agreement between both countries for cooperation in sport and recreation.
The sporting disciplines to be targeted under the cooperation include athletics, football, rugby, netball, and cricket.
The tour, which commenced on Tuesday, November 21, will also facilitate presentations by the Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA), the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA), and visits to the University of Technology Jamaica and the GC Foster College of Physical Education and Sports.
