Jamaica Zoo, which has become a household name in St Elizabeth and a tourist attraction, is embarking on expanding to Africa in the Republic of Ghana.
Operator of the 158-acre attraction in Lacovia, Paul Fearon is reporting that investors in Ghana’s capital Accra have approached him to open a location there.
Fearon explained that he has been in dialogue with the Ghanaian investors for the past eight months, noting that they have identified a 100-acre lot, which has on the property a waterfall, which would complement the attractions of a zoo.
He hinted at a positive response to expanding to Ghana, noting that the Ghana location would have to include more lions, hyenas, elephants and exotic birds from South America than in Jamaica.

However, the look and operations would be identical to what is done in Jamaica. There will be a gift shop, where persons can purchase Jamaican memorabilia and a restaurant preparing authentic Jamaican cuisine.
Fearon is expected to leave the island next month to start phase one of his Ghanaian project, spending three weeks to prepare the property.
Despite the lost revenue in 2022 due to a lion biting an employee and subsequent temporary closure ordered by the National Environmental and Planning Agency for environmental breaches, Fearon sees much growth for Jamaica Zoo in the years ahead.
