Jamaican-American Annika Ashton is set to become the new Broward County Attorney, marking a significant milestone for Caribbean representation in one of Florida’s largest counties.
She was voted into office unanimously by the Broward County Commission, which made the appointment on March 26, 2026, following a motion by Mark Bogen, Mayor of Broward County, and Commissioner Lamar Fisher. Ashton will officially assume the role on September 10, 2026, after the retirement of current Broward County Attorney, Andrew Meyers.
A native of Jamaica and Broward County, Ashton currently serves as Deputy County Attorney, where she leads the County Attorney’s Office of Finance, Real Property, and Housing practice group. In this role, she provides legal services related to the management of real property, structuring financial transactions for ongoing capital bond issuances and other financing arrangements, and supporting affordable housing programs.
Ashton also serves as counsel to several county agencies, including the Office of Management and Budget, Finance and Administrative Services Department, the Real Property Section, and the Housing Finance Authority.
Before joining the County Attorney’s Office, Ashton served as a law clerk for Adalberto Jordan of the US District Court for the Southern District of Florida and the US Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit. She later practised in the Real Estate and Labour and Employment practice groups of international law firms in New York and Miami.
