U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, Damian Williams, the son of Jamaican immigrants, has found himself at the forefront of a significant legal controversy following the indictment of Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs.
The Williams family is from Frome, Westmoreland.
Damion married academic and fellow Harvard graduate Jennifer Wynn in 2012 in Manhattan. He, however, was born in New York City and raised in Atlanta, where he built an impressive legal career, becoming the first black U.S. attorney in his district.
An alumnus of Harvard University and Emmanuel College, Cambridge, he furthered his legal studies at Yale Law School, laying the groundwork for a career that would lead him to oversee major cases.
The Diddy Case
Working alongside acting special agent (ASA) in charge of the New York Field Office of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), William S. Walker, Williams announced that Combs had been arrested and indicted on multiple charges, including racketeering conspiracy, sex trafficking, and transportation for prostitution.
The indictment alleges that Combs has led a criminal enterprise involved in various crimes since 2008, including sexual abuse and obstruction of justice.
Williams described the indictment as a vital step in the pursuit of justice.
“For years, Sean Combs used the business empire he controlled to sexually abuse and exploit women, as well as to commit other acts of violence and obstruction of justice,” he stated.
Combs has been denied bail and will remain in custody following a federal judge’s ruling. His legal team plans to appeal while he has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
Currently, he is being held in a Special Housing Unit at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, which has housed other high-profile inmates like R Kelly.
