Sagicor Group Jamaica is confirming the death of Jamaican insurance pioneer and philanthropist Dr Danny Williams.

Sagicor, in a statement, indicated that Williams passes away today (September 16) at an undisclosed hospital in Miami, Florida, where he had undergone surgery.

Williams was 89 years old.

Williams was the founder of Jamaica’s first domestically-owned life insurance company; Life of Jamaica, now Sagicor Life Jamaica. He was a selfless person who dedicated his life to service in various capacities – both in the public and private sectors, giving of his personal time and resources to help underserved and underprivileged Jamaicans.

In remembering his former chairman, Sagicor president and CEO, Christopher Zacca stated, “He was deeply loved, respected and admired by colleagues, employees, and industry peers alike for his integrity and compassion. We reflect on his immense contribution to Jamaica and the tremendous legacy he leaves behind.”

Throughout his distinguished 63-year career, Williams played an instrumental role in shaping the Jamaican life insurance industry, as well as the success and growth of Sagicor Group Jamaica. As founder, president, and chairman, he steered the company through significant milestones and challenges leaving an indelible mark on its 53-year history.

His visionary leadership, unwavering dedication and commitment to excellence were unparallel and sowed the seeds for Sagicor Group Jamaica’s growth into a regional powerhouse. In 2017, in recognition of his service to SGJ, he was named as director emeritus.

“The profound impact of our beloved Danny will continue to shape the future and direction of Sagicor. His departure has left a void in our hearts at Sagicor and indeed  the entire Jamaican business community,” the company statement continued.

“We join with all of Jamaica in offering our sincere condolences to his wife Shirley, of 69 years, and the rest of his extended family,” Sagicor noted.
