Recognising that the transition from adolescence to adulthood can be a daunting one for young females, Jamaican student Isheba Cornwall endeavours to, through her new radio show, Woman Up, provide a safe space for the discussion of issues affecting women.

Speaking with Our Today on Tuesday (June 21), Cornwall shared that “Woman Up is a brand new radio show that specifically aims to transform the lives of young women in Jamaica.”

Through the art of storytelling, the show aims to educate Gen Z on topics of importance to women in order “to build and empower a generation of strong confident women”.

Beginning on Wednesday (June 29) at 8 pm, the show will air weekly on Newstalk 93 FM.

According to the show’s host, among other things, “Woman Up aims to teach young women in Jamaica how they can navigate womanhood, with a focus on topics such as education, career, finance, relationships and mental and physical health”.

When asked by Our Today about her motivation to create a show targeted at young women, Cornwall explained: “At the start of the year I realised that I would have turned 21. Though I was excited, I was also really scared of what was to come.”

The final-year University of the West Indies student further disclosed that it occurred to her that, while she had now made the transition to adulthood, there were many things she was expected to know that she did not.

“I had no one to teach me these things, so it was either I researched it on my own or I just wouldn’t know,” she said.

“That is when I thought about any platform I could possibly go on to watch or listen to conversations surrounding womanhood and I couldn’t really find any.”

As a result, Cornwall said she decided she wanted “to create a space solely for the education and upliftment of our young women in Jamaica… where conversations can be had about the good, the bad and even the ugly things about womanhood”.

On the matter of what goals she would like for the show to achieve, the 21-year-old told Our Today: “One of the main things is education. The sole purpose of the show is to educate, so I would love for women to be able to learn (from) our show.

“For example, if there is something that comes up about relationships, such as how to navigate dating as a young woman, I want this to be the platform that they come to when they think about that.”

Isheba Cornwall is a 21-year-old, University of the West Indies final year student who is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Integrated Marketing Communication. She considers herself to be a social advocate for youth empowerment and enjoys inspiring the next generation of Jamaica’s youth.
