A Jamaican national, Dwayne Claud Singh, who has been living in New Haven, Connecticut, was arrested on Wednesday after federal authorities said he illegally re-entered the United States after being previously deported.

The 37-year-old was deported to Jamaica in January 2018. US Attorney for the District of Connecticut, David X Sullivan and special agent in charge of Homeland Security Investigations in New England, Michael J Krol say Singh was convicted in state courts in 2014 of drug, weapon and forgery offences and sentenced to five years in prison.

In December 2017, he was ordered to be removed to Jamaica, but at some point, Singh illegally reentered the US and has been using documents from Connecticut and California to identify himself as Kevin Anthony Smith, the US Attorney’s office said in a news release.

The release noted that Singh has an active arrest warrant from the state for breach of peace and threatening offences, which was issued in March 2023. Singh appeared before US Magistrate Judge Robert M Spector, where he was ordered to be detained pending a hearing scheduled for Monday.

If convicted of unlawful reentry, Singh faces up to 20 years in prison, the US Attorney’s office said.
