Jamaicans got some good news from yesterday’s  opening budget debate presentation with Finance Minister, Dr Nigel Clarke announcing no new or increased taxes for the upcoming 2022-2023 fiscal year.

Clarke, making his opening contribution to the 2022-2023 Budget Debate in the House of Representatives, said the Government’s focus is on “prioritising economic recovery, which we want to achieve in the quickest possible time. Increasing taxes at this time would run counter to that objective”. 

He told Parliament, to thunderous applause from the Government side: “I am pleased to begin my remarks by informing the people of Jamaica that there will be NO NEW TAXES.”

Clarke highlighted that this is the seventh consecutive fiscal year where, on a net basis, the Government has not raised taxes.

Also, this is the fifth consecutive fiscal year where there will be absolutely no new taxes.
