Jamaica’s Mount Pleasant are on the cusp of securing their first Caribbean Cup title when they take a 1-0 lead into the second leg final at the National Stadium against O&M FC of the Dominican Republic, starting at 7:00 pm.

Mount Pleasant, formed in 2016, only need a draw to be crowned champions of the Caribbean and head coach Theodore Whitmore believes they are ready.

“Preparation has been going well. I think it’s the last leg. It’s just for the players to execute. We think we are in a good space,” said Whitmore.

“The players are upbeat. The technical staff are also upbeat. It would mean a lot for the club, the management, the staff, the players and the entire Jamaica at large,” he noted. “As I said before, it’s just for us to go out there…and execute and finish the job.”

Jamaica hold a one-goal advantage, having won 1-0 in the Dominican Republic last week. The club is fancied to secure Jamaica’s second consecutive Caribbean title following the success of Cavalier last year.

Mount Pleasant also defeated O&M FC 2-0 in the group stage, but Whitmore quickly pointed out that those results are behind them and today’s game will be much different.

“We played O&M twice, on both occasions, they have shown something different. We expect a tough game. We expect the O&M team to come at us. They are a goal down, but we don’t want to take anything for granted,” said Whitmore.

“I think the last game we were a bit off in terms of rustiness because we weren’t engaged in any games for such a long time. We got that game under our belt, and what I have seen from the last couple of days from the players, they are up for it,” he added.

Mount Pleasant will be without the influential Demario Phillips, but Whitmore quickly pointed to the depth of his squad to overcome his absence.

“We have a squad of 30-odd players, so any player that is out shouldn’t be a problem. I think we have depth in the squad. Yes, he will be missed, but that doesn’t stop the show from going on,” he noted.

Mount Pleasant will be hoping to be the fourth Jamaican club to conquer the Caribbean, following in the footsteps of Portmore United, Harbour View and Cavalier.
