Jamaica’s Under-17 Reggae Boyz kicked off their World Cup campaign beating Aruba 3-0 in the CONCACAF Undr-17 Championship in Costa Rica on Friday.
Kelvon Brown of Kingston College and Harbour View opened the scoring slotting home in the 45+5 minute from captain Jahmari Nolan’s cross.
Justin Hayles of Clarendon College scored a beauty ramming home from 25 metre to double Jamaica’s advantage before Nolan capped off a good night scoring the third goal in 90+4 minutes.
The Young Reggae Boyz are joint top of Group G with three points, the same as Canada which defeated Cayman Island 3-0.
Only the group winner will advance to the FIFA World Cup set for Qatar later this year.
Jamaica’s assistant coach Vassell Reynolds to d Our Today it was important to win the first game.
“There are three games to played and the aim is to win all three games which will guarantee a place in the World Cup,” said Reynolds.
“We started the game a little flat, the wind was a factor, the butterflies were evident but we settled down somewhat deep into the half and got that important first goal just before the half time and that sort of set the tone for the second half,” he explained.
“Our performance was much better in the second half and we got two additional goals. We passed the ball with a higher level of accuracy, exercise the required patience,” said Reynolds.
However, Jamaica missed a few chances and with goal difference could be a factor, Reynolds rued the missed opportunities.
“Maybe we could have executed our goal scoring opportunities much better. Overall, it was a decent effort but clearly we have identified a couple of areas individually and as team where we need to improve for the next game,” he noted.
Jamaica will next face Cayman Islands on Sunday before taking on Canada next week Wednesday in what should be the crucial deciding game to the World Cup.
