Jason Holder took four wickets but his Sunrisers Hyderabad in lost their final match in the 2021 Indian Premier League (IPL), going down by 42 runs to the Mumbai Indians in Abu Dhabi on Friday.

The former West Indies captain took 4-52 as Mumbai scored 235 for 9 from their allotment of 20 overs.

In reply, Sunrisers scored 193-8. Both teams failed to advance to the IPL playoffs.

Last year’s champions, Mumbai finished fifth in the standings with 14 points, while Sunrisers, with six points, finished at the foot of the table.

Man of the Match Ishan Kishan, who shared an opening stand of 80 with Rohit Sharma (18), top scored with 84 from just 32 balls that gave Mumbai a perfect start in the Powerplay. Suryakumar Yadav shored up the middle order with a fine 82 from 40 balls despite the fall of wickets at regular intervals including that of Kieron Pollard for just 13.

Yadav was the last Mumbai wicket to fall and Holder’s fourth, in the final over after smashing 11 fours and four sixes.

Holder also claimed the wickets of Hardik Pandya for 10, Nathan Counter-Nile for three and Piyush Chawla for 0 but he was the most expensive of the Sunrisers’ bowling going at 13 an over.

Rashid Khan finished with 2-40 from his four overs while Abhishek Sharma returned best figures of 2-4 from the one over he bowled.

Sunrisers’ chase got off to a good start scoring 64 in the Powerplay as Jason Roy (34) and Sharma (33) built a solid platform. Captain Manish Pandey scored an unbeaten 69 from 41 balls but his team kept losing wickets at the other end as Jasprit Bumrah (2-39), James Neesham (2-28) and Counter-Nile (2-40), combined to undermine the Sunrisers’ middle order.

Only Priyam Garg offered any resistance with 29 from 21 balls in the futile chase.

Holder, who took 16 wickets for Sunrisers during the season, thanked the team afterwards saying he will take valuable lessons from the experience.

“We never know what the future holds but to live this experience is one hell of a thing. A huge thank you to @sunrisershyd for giving me memories which will last me a lifetime, friendships and bonds that will never die,” he said on Instagram Friday.

“Lots of learning and growing took place and I have no doubt this franchise rise again. Most importantly, to the orange army I thank you.”

Only Rashid Khan with 18 wickets took more for Sunrisers Hyderabad than Holder.
