In a moment of historic significance, Jaydon Hibbert was named the first-ever recipient of the prestigious Jamaica Olympic Association (JOA) Olympic Spirit Award at a glittering ceremony last night at the Terra Nova Hotel in Kingston.

The accolade recognises Jaydon’s unwavering determination, resilience, and embodiment of Olympic values during the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.

Despite competing while experiencing discomfort, Jaydon delivered a phenomenal performance in the Men’s Triple Jump, finishing just 0.03 centimetres shy of the bronze medal to secure an impressive fourth place. Notably, he was the youngest competitor in the field, demonstrating extraordinary poise and grit beyond his years.

The JOA’s citation lauds his achievement, describing him as “dauntless and with inborn patriotism,” commending his ability to “give it his all,” even when faced with physical challenges.

The citation further states: “The heart of a gladiator will always beat with the lifeblood of a champion, and Jaydon is of that mettle. The Jamaica Olympic Association (JOA) applauds Jaydon Hibbert, a distinguished brother of our household and our first Olympic Spirit awardee.”

Hibbert has also been nominated for the World Athletics Rising Star Award for the second consecutive year, further cementing his status as one of the brightest young talents in athletics.

President of the Jamaica Olympic Association, Christopher Samuda, highlighted Jaydon’s remarkable achievement during his address at the ceremony, noting that:

“The award not only recognises athletic excellence but also celebrates the spirit of perseverance and sportsmanship that transcends the playing field.”

Jaydon Hibbert, speaking after receiving the award, expressed his gratitude: “To be recognised in this way is truly humbling. The Olympic Games were a test of my spirit, and I’m proud to represent Jamaica on and off the field. This award serves as motivation for what’s to come.”

The awards event also celebrated Jamaica’s Olympic medallists from Paris 2024. Christopher Samuda added: “Jaydon’s inclusion underscores the JOA’s commitment to celebrating not only athletic success but also the core values of Olympism – character, courage, and unyielding grit, the true essence of the Olympic spirit.”
