With the festive season in full swing and shopping activity at its peak, the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) is reminding the public to remain vigilant, as increased movement between commercial areas creates opportunities for criminal elements.

The JCF is therefore encouraging citizens to take proactive steps to safeguard themselves and their belongings.

Here are a few essential safety tips to help ensure a secure and enjoyable shopping experience during this festive period:

  • Stay Aware and Alert: Remain vigilant of your surroundings, especially in crowded or high-traffic areas. Limit distractions such as prolonged phone calls while walking.
  • Protect Your Valuables: Secure handbags, purses, wallets, and mobile phones. Use bags that can be zipped or fastened and avoid carrying them loosely.
  • Avoid Displaying Large Amounts of Cash: Whenever carrying large amounts of cash, keep it concealed. When making purchases, avoid displaying large amounts of cash.
  • Use ATMs Safely Select: ATMs located in secure, well-lit areas. Shield your PIN and remain vigilant for suspicious activity, persons, or unusual attachments to the machine.
  • Park Vehicles in Secure Locations: Lock all doors and avoid leaving valuables visible inside your vehicle.
  • Shop in Groups When Possible: Travelling with family or friends reduces vulnerability and increases personal safety, especially at night.
  • Be Cautious with Online Purchases: Verify websites before entering personal or financial information. Avoid sending deposits to unverified sellers or clicking on suspicious links.
  • Keep Children Close: Do not allow young children to wander in busy areas. Provide them with emergency contact information in case of separation.
  • Plan Your Route and Timing: Avoid late-night shopping when possible. Inform someone of your expected return time and stick to well-travelled routes.
  • Report Suspicious Activity Immediately: If you observe unusual behaviour, suspicious persons, or potential threats, contact the nearest police station or call 119.
  • Secure Purchased Items Promptly: Do not linger or leave recently bought items unattended, if possible, secure items in the trunk of your vehicle or out of sight from potential threats.

The JCF remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of all persons during the Yuletide season and encourages the public to act responsibly and always remain vigilant.
