JCF reports reduction in crime across the island

Jamaica has seen a 22.4 per cent reduction in murders between the period of January 1 to March 25, 2023, compared to last year.

The Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) serious crimes report revealed that Jamaica recorded 280 murders up to the period of March 25, 2023. This is 71 fewer murders compared to corresponding period in which the country recorded 351 murders.

From the JCF statistics, the police division of St James accounted for the highest number of murders for the month with 38. This is followed by Kingston Western police division with 26, Clarendon and Westmoreland each recorded 24 murders, St Catherine South with 20 and St Catherine North with 18.

The St Andrew South police division recorded 16 murders, followed closely by St Ann and Kingston Eastern which each recorded 15 murders.

Hanover recorded 13 murders, Manchester (12), St Andrew North (11) and Kingston Central and St Andrew Central each recorded 10.

Meanwhile, St Thomas(nine), St Mary (eight), St Elizabeth (five), Trelawny (four) and Portland (two) recorded the least number of homicides for the period.

The report also revealed that there was a 14. 4 per cent reduction in shootings, 49.6 per cent reduction in rape, 31.3 per cent in robberies, and a 10.6 per cent reduction in burglary for the period compared to the corresponding year.
