Since the COVID-19 pandemic, Jamaica has seen an increase in violence among students. This increase has prompted the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) to train 211 school resource officers (SRO) to assist school administrators across the island.
Police Commissioner Major General Antony Anderson noted that, though discipline in schools is largely an issue for the school administrators, the JCF will still provide resources to assist.
There are 154 schools on the programme with priority being given to schools that are more prone to violence.
The JCF has also scheduled more than 2,000 school visits islandwide.
“In addition to our efforts, we want the parents and community to participate in ensuring that our children are safe. We must have the conversation with them about conflict resolution,” stressed the commissioner.
Jamaican students fully return to face-to-face school this month after a two-year hiatus caused by the pandemic.
