West Indies vice-captain Jermaine Blackwood doesn’t intend to curb his aggressive stroke play even as he has urged his teammates to spend more time at the crease if they are to win the second Test against Pakistan that begins at Sabina Park on Friday (August 20)
Blackwood was among the West Indies’ leading run-scorers in the first Test that the home side won by one wicket. He scored 22 in the West Indies’ first innings score of 253 but crucially scored 55 in the second innings as the West Indies successfully chased 168 in the second innings, albeit for the loss of nine wickets.
However, he said he has no plans to change his approach to batting, insisting that he always plans to face at least 150 balls each time he goes out to bat.
“I am an aggressive batsman and I am always going to be aggressive but once I can curb it a little bit I don’t think my team will kill me for that because as you saw in the last game in the fourth innings on that pitch, if I didn’t go out there and get that aggressive I think would be talking about something different today,” Blackwood contended.
He faced just 54 balls in the West Indies first innings and 78 for his 55 in the second innings.
He said, however, that the batting coach Monty Desai has been urging him to be patient, choose the right balls and stay in the moment.
That said, he believes his fellow batsman would be better served by making better choices while at the crease as that would enhance their abilities to spend more time at the crease and consequently score more runs.
“In the last game you saw some bits of application, so once we can go out there and bat for longer periods I don’t see why we can’t win the series because the bowlers have always done an awesome job for us,” he said.
“I think once can get down to ball selection and select the right balls to score and which ones to leave and defend that will be much better for us.”
