The Jamaica Institution of Engineers (JIE) recognised outstanding engineering achievements at their annual awards dinner and gala on November 12, 2022.

The premier award of the night was presented to engineer David Smith, director of quality & innovation at Smith Warner International and a senior lecturer (part time) in the Faculty of Engineering, The University of the West Indies, Mona, in Coastal Engineering and Fluid Mechanics.  He was recognised for “distinguished achievements and tremendous contribution to engineering”.

One of the most anticipated competitions – ‘The Engineering Project of the Year’ – was won by the Jamaica Social Investment Fund (JSIF) for its Port Royal Street Coastal Revetment Project which included a seawall, upgraded stormwater drainage, upgraded roads, boardwalk and fishing beach.

Other nominees were the Jamaica Public Service (JPS) 10MW Combined Heat & Power Energy Facility; the Supreme Ventures Racing & Entertainment Limited with two projects – the Caymanas Park Energy Project as well as the Caymanas Park Digital Screen. The National Water Commission also had two projects nominated for Project of the Year – the Six Miles to Blake Road Transmission Main Upgrade and the Greater Portmore WWTP Upgrade and Rehabilitation Project.

Young engineers were not left behind as the JIE, in association with New Fortress Energy (NFE), collaborated to present the JIE/NFE Graduate Students Awards to the top performing graduate engineers from the country’s tertiary institutions.

Awardees were Daniel Meggo, The UWI, Mona, Faculty of Engineering; Ruthanne McLymont, University of Technology, Faculty of Engineering and Kevaughn Harrison, Caribbean Maritime University.

Also lauded by JIE Immediate Past President Marvin Campbell for outstanding contributions to the 2021/2022 Council were Engineers Melissa Townsend – the President’s Cup; Ajani Jacobs – Outstanding Graduate Member and D’Wayne Coley, Chair of the Engineers Week 2022 Committee.
