Members of the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) turned out in their numbers yesterday evening (November 6) at the Cheesefield Community Centre in North East St Catherine, in support of Member of Parliament (MP) Kerensia Morrison.
The conference is one of many that were held over the weekend leading up to the party’s annual conference, set for November 20 at the National Arena in Kingston.
Following the Government’s announcement of an increased allocation of $1.32 billion to carry out road rehabilitation, de-bushing, and other activities across the island’s 63 constituencies, Morrison plans to address infrastructural issues within her constituency.
Prime Minister Andrew Holness highlighted that each constituency would receive $21 million to carry out mitigation works over the Christmas period.
“Well, we heard what the prime minister announced in parliament about the Christmas work and that is always a time when there is high engagement in St Catherine North Eastern,” Morrison told Our Today.
The member of parliament said road repairs are among her utmost priorities, and she intends on address the issue.
“To be sure, I plan to rehabilitate an entire road with a part of that money. At least $13 million will be spent on road infrastructure because I would describe that as being among my most pressing needs here in St Catherine North Estern and for the last two Christmases, I did two roads so that will always be heavy focus, road rehabilitation,” Morrison said.
The York Street Road, which falls within the MP’s constituency, has been in a deplorable state for several years, which has led taxi operators to stage a number of demonstrations over that time.
Morrison shared that the road (York Street) was put to tender and repairs are soon to take place.
“So, we are actually waiting on it to be awarded. I went through the proper channels to ensure that York Street will soon be able to celebrate having their road fixed. I must say to the citizens who are agitating, I do understand your plight. It has been years without a good road but finally that remedy is coming very soon.”
She admitted that the process to achieving proper infrastructure will take time and said she was committed to getting the job done.
“I want to say to the people of my constituency, we know it’s a constituency where, in terms of infrastructure, not much has happened and certainly not at the pace that the people would like. Resources, certainly I would say, is the number one reason. As their member of parliament I am committed to exhausting every means possible to bring the relief and remedy that they so deserve, will it happen overnight no, am I committed – certainly,” Morrison stated.
With just two years in office, the member of parliament is asking that her constituents exercise patience.
“I continue to ask for patience, you deserve everything that is good and in time we are going to achieve those things,” she said. .
Several MPs who were in attendance told the members of the constituency that they are in “good hands” and Kerensia Morrison is the way forward for North East St Catherine.
