Jamaican Olympian and Government Minister Juliet Cuthbert-Flynn was honoured by the Guyana Jamaica Friendship Association for her contribution to sport in Jamaica during her outstanding athletic career.

Cuthbert-Flynn was recognised for her achievements at the award ceremony on October 7 in New York.
The retired track and field sprinter graciously accepted the award, thanking the association for the tremendous work it has done since 2014.

“I am humbled to receive recognition for my athletic achievements by the Guyana Jamaica Friendship Association in New York last evening. I wish to thank Dr Frank Denbow, Claudette Powell, and their members. Your tremendous work with young children in Guyana and Jamaica has touched many lives positively,” wrote Cuthbert-Flynn in a post on social media.

She added that she was inspired by the many stories that she heard at the award ceremony and recognised the association for its impact on youths.

Background in sports

Cuthbert-Flynn competed in the 100m and 200m at the Olympic Games in Barcelona, Spain in 1992. She secured the silver medal in both races, an achievement that propelled her to be voted “Sportswoman of the Year” that same year.

She was also a part of the Jamaican 100m relay team at the 1996 Olympic games in Atlanta and secured a bronze medal for the event. Additionally, she participated in the sprint relays at the World Championships, with team Jamaica securing gold in 1991, a silver in 1995, and a silver medal in 1997.

Cuthbert is now state minister in Jamaica’s Ministry of National Security and a former state minister in the Ministry of Health and Wellness.
