The Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) collaborated with ministries of culture and social security to enhance accessibility during Worker’s Week 2024.

This partnership culminated in a social services expo at Emancipation Park on May 22, where over a dozen JUTC volunteers dedicated their time to assist the elderly and disabled in navigating the different booths with available social services.

The JUTC’s involvement in the expo was strategic positioning for their pre-Labour Day activity, aimed at making their services more accessible to the public. Attendees had the opportunity to sign up for the SmarterCard bus card, which offers reduced fares for cardholders. They were also able to top up their cards and check the expiry dates of their existing cards.

Kimberly Gardner, corporate communications manager, addressed the crowd at the event, emphasising the company’s commitment to enhancing the public transport experience.

“It is the mission of the JUTC to provide commuters with the best public transportation experience,” Gardner stated.

Currently, JUTC operates twelve 12 special access buses designed to accommodate individuals with mobility challenges. The company anticipates expanding its fleet with an additional 10 special access buses set to arrive later this year, further reinforcing its commitment to inclusivity and accessibility in public transportation.
