The Jamaica Urban Transit Company Limited (JUTC) has announced that there will be an increased cost for the replacement of Smarter cards, effective September 26.

In a statement, the JUTC said the price increase is due to a significant rise in the production cost of the Smarter cards by international supplier.

The changes will see concession (the elderly and students) passengers pay $400 up from $300 while adult passengers will now pay $700 up from $500 to replace their Smarter card.

There will be no fees attached to new Smarter cards. However, customers are free to determine how much they wish to top-up their new cards with.

The Smarter card is a convenient rechargeable system used by JUTC passengers to pay their fares. The move came about several years ago as the JUTC seeks to encourage members of the public to its use its cashless system.

The JUTC is an agency of the Ministry of Transport and Mining and is the exclusive provider of public transit services in the Kingston Metropolitan Transit Region (KMTR).

The operations of the JUTC spread across various depots in the KMTR – Spanish Town, Portmore and Rockfort. In addition, buses are dispatched daily from several outstations to go as far as Longville in Clarendon.
