Kamala Harris must engage with the media and present her vision for the United States

Kamala Hariss is now the Democratic Party’s nominee for November’s U.S. presidential election where she will face off against former President Donald Trump.

The Democratic Party was aghast at Joe Biden’s performance against Trump in the first presidential debate and saw the writing all the wall. Pelosi, the Clintons, Chuck Schumer, the Obamas made him step aside in favour of Kamala Harris to give them a better chance against Trump and to strengthen their chances of winning both the Senate and the House of Representatives.

Initially, Barack Obama chose to wait before hastily backing Harris, favouring selecting from a number of candidates on the Convention floor.

Harris has been chosen as the Democrats’ standard-bearer for more than a month now and has yet to come before the press and outline her vision for the country. What are her policy positions?  What is her position on law and order? How does she intend to spur the productive sector more particularly manufacturing? What are her prescriptions for curtailing inflation? Do people like Jamie Dimon and Larry Summers endorse her economic and financial policies? It is just one big echo chamber.

The media should be outraged that you have a Democratic presidential candidate who does not want to willingly come before it and answer questions. What can be deduced from this is that she deems the media irrelevant and that is disturbing and ominous for the media business.

It is said that Kamala Harris is a DEI choice and she has to demonstrate why this is not so. Many black professional women, particular those who make a living in the media and government agencies get indignant when this is said.

It simply is not enough to say we want to see the first black woman President despite the fact that she cannot make the case for why Americans should entrust her with this awesome power.

Yes, she is non-offensive, yes she is attractive, yes she looks good in a pantsuit but what else? Where is the substance?

When people call out Kamala Harris for not being definitive, not being forthcoming, they are accused of being a racist, a misogynistic, a hater. In this woke/cancel culture era it could be detrimental to ask these questions. It’s probably better to keep your own counsel.

Say what you will about Donald Trump but he is unequivocally clear about his vision for America. He has outlined his position on immigration, taxes, law and order, inflation, energy, and employment. He has come before the media, even outlets who patently do not favour him.

Saying he is bombastic and wants to take America backwards is not a strong enough case for Harris to secure the Presidency and she is a prosecutor. She is yet to make her case.

Many black American men have indicated why they are supporting Trump and it has nothing to do with elevated testosterone levels, toxic masculinity and all that jazz. The reason why they are backing him is that he unapologetically makes his case and believes in what he is saying. They don’t get that from Kamala Harris.

Her pronouncements are awkward and anodyne. She comes across as opaque. She has not demonstrated she has mastered the issues that concern Americans.

She is not a political athlete like Barack Obama and Bill Clinton but she doesn’t have to be.

At the Democratic Convention last week, she gave a good speech and told her life story rather well. She is genuinely non-abrasive with a friendly disposition. She will not take extreme positions but she has to show America and the world that she is qualified for the job.

If Trump refused to engage with the media, the likes of Joe Scarborough, Abby Phillips, Laura Coates, Kaitlin Collins, Rachel Maddow, Jake Tapper, Van Jones and Joy Reid would have a conniption yet they all give Kamala Harris a pass.

Kamala Harris has dissed the left-eaning liberal media who are her avowed supporters and that has to be the ultimate disrespect.

All former presidential candidates of recent memory have come before the media and made their case – Not Kamala Harris. Why?

If she should win it sets a dangerous precedent and renders the media irrelevant.

Also, it means that you don’t have to be bright to be the leader of the world’s most powerful country. You don’t have to be a communicator. You don’t need to be on top of the affairs of state. All you need to be is inane and anodyne. This does not bode well for the future. The first quarter of a new century has not been a good one. Standards have dropped and it cannot be said that we are heading into a bright and glorious future. America is more divisive than it has ever been and could be a powder keg ready to explode. This is a time for leadership, where people can have the confidence that their lives and their children’s lives will be better, for America to reassert its pre-eminence.

As Presidential candidate Walter Mondale once said, ”Where’s the beef?”
