Following up on Tina Clayton’s 100m gold medal at the World U20 Championships in Kenya on Thursday, Kavian Kerr won a bronze medal in the long jump earlier today (August 20) to land a second medal for Jamaica.

Kerr, who attends St Jago High School, jumped a personal best of 7.90m during the competition won by France’s Erwan Konate, who uncorked a World U20 leading jump of 8.12m. Jhon Andres Berrio of Colombia won the silver medal with his best effort of 7.97m, a new national U20 record.

Meanwhile, Ackera Nugent ran 13.02 to advance to the finals of the 100m hurdles. Her compatriot Oneka Wilson ran a time of 13.39 to also advance to the finals where they will face off with Swiss talent Ditaji Kambundji, the younger sister Mujinga Kambundji, who was a finalist in both the 100m and 200m at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics in Japan earlier this month.

In the 110m hurdles, Vashaun Vascianna ran a season-best 13.35s to advance to the finals. His was the second fastest time heading into the final as French athlete Sasha Zhoya set a new world record of 12.93 to win his semi-final.

He shattered the previous record of 12.99 jointly held by compatriot Wilhem Belocian, who set the record in 2014 and which was Jamaica’s Damion Thomas in 2018.

Namibia’s Christine Mboma and Beatrice Masilingi both broke Briana Williams championship record of 22.50 when they ran 22.41 and 22.19, respectively to advance to the finals of the 200m where they will face Jamaica’s Brianna Lyston and Alliyah Richards, who ran personal best times of 23.18 and 23.70, respectively.
