Kendrick Lamar has made history this week by securing the top five spots on the Billboard Hot 100 chart with songs from his surprise album GNX.

Lamar’s track Squabble Up debuted at number one on the Hot 100, his third number one hit of 2024. Four other songs from GNX round out the top five, with additional tracks from the album occupying the number eight and number nine positions. With this achievement, Lamar ties a record held by rap rival Drake, as well as pop icons Taylor Swift and The Beatles, as one of the few performers to have simultaneously claimed the entire top five on the Hot 100.

This latest chart feat comes after Lamar’s explosive year due to his high-profile rap feud with Drake. Despite the rivalry, Lamar’s GNX album has been met with widespread acclaim and commercial success, further solidifying his position as one of the most influential figures in modern rap.

A great year to be Lamar

Lamar’s success on the Hot 100 extends beyond his chart-topping songs. He now holds the distinction of having the most number one hits on the Hot 100 in 2024 following Squabble Up. His earlier hits Like That (a collaboration with Future and Metro Boomin) and Not Like Us, a five-time Grammy-nominated diss track aimed at Drake, were also number one hits.

GNX has not only dominated the singles chart but also claimed the number one spot on the Billboard 200 album chart, with 319,000 album units sold or streamed since its surprise release on November 22.

The release of GNX was the culmination of a tumultuous year for Lamar, largely defined by his ongoing feud with Drake. Fans and the media have declared Lamar the victor in their rap rivalry, which was ignited by Lamar’s sharp bars and diss tracks earlier in 2024.

The feud, however, hasn’t been entirely one-sided. Lamar’s song Heart Pt. 6, a continuation of his well-known Heart series, also draws inspiration from Drake’s Heart track, further intensifying their rivalry. The animosity escalated after Lamar released Not Like Us, a blistering diss track accusing Drake of being a “certified paedophile” — an allegation Drake has vigorously denied.

With the year still not over, it’s clear that Kendrick Lamar is surely ending 2024 as one of the most dominant artiste in the industry. His latest achievement on the charts has cemented his legacy as one of rap’s most influential and controversial figures.
