Grenadian Olympian Kirani James has been conferred with the Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) as the United Kingdom released its New Year’s Honours List on Saturday (January 1).
James, Grenada’s first Olympic gold medalist, won a bronze medal in the 400m at the Tokyo Olympics to go along with his silver medal in 2016 and gold in 2012.
“All of this is an honour. We all have a part to play as Grenadian citizens in terms of portraying our country in a positive light and showing people what we have to offer,” said the 29-year-old James, who has represented his country with pride and aplomb since his days as a teenager.
James won gold at the 2011 World Championships in Daegu and bronze at the 2015 championships and won 400m at the Commonwealth Games in 2014.
His talent was apparent since his early days in the sport winning five gold medals at the Carifta Games between 2007 and 2010.
He would win 400m gold at the World Junior Championships in 2010.
Since 2017, James has battled with Grave’s Disease that has impacted his ability to perform consistently at a high level but still managed to end up on the podium on Tokyo in the summer, a testament to his resilience.
